Our History

Like many other law firms, as Wells & Co has expanded over the years we have evolved as a firm and acquired the practices of other law firms when the lawyers involved chose to move on.

Shortly after Mark Wells set up his law firm as JMT Wells, Barrister and Solicitor in Remuera in 1986, Mark acquired the practice of another Remuera based Lawyer, Vic Pritchard, Barrister and Solicitor.

When the firm expanded to include associates Mark changed the name of his firm to Wells, Barristers and Solicitors. When Mark was joined in partnership, the firm's name changed again to become Wells & Co, Barristers and Solicitors.

As Wells & Co we acquired the practice of Mike Mathieson, Barrister and Solicitor, another Remuera-based lawyer. Soon after that we acquired the practice of Sophie Ryan-Ross, Barrister and Solicitor, who had also been based in Remuera.

Wells & Co expanded to Howick when we acquired the practice of David Burns, Barrister and Solicitor, who operated from our current premises at the corner of Picton Street and Selwyn Road, Howick. In 2010 we acquired the practice of Paul Devereux, Barrister and Solicitor, who had offices opposite ours on Picton Street, Howick.

In 2015 we acquired the practice of BentonLaw, Solicitors, which was founded by Mr Robert Benton.  In 2018 we acquired the practice of Justin Ellis, Barrister and Solicitor, who had for many years shared offices with us at 419 Remuera Road.
